ABOUTFOUNDER’S NOTE
A Note from Our Founder
When I established BMGA in 2019, I was driven by a simple conviction: education should do more than prepare people to earn qualifications. It should equip them with the knowledge, skills, confidence and capabilities to navigate the realities of the 21st century and succeed in work and in life.
I believed then, as I do today, that investing in human potential is one of the most meaningful ways to advance individual opportunity and societal progress.
I was particularly concerned about the gap between formal education and the realities young women encounter as they transition into professional life. Academic achievement matters, but it does not always prepare individuals for the complexities of the workplace or teach them the unspoken rules of navigating professional environments and succeeding within them.
Understanding how to build meaningful relationships, communicate effectively, exercise sound judgment, navigate workplace dynamics and recognise opportunities can be just as important as technical knowledge. Yet these are often the very things young people are expected to figure out on their own.
I wanted to help bridge that gap.
The BMGA Fellows Program was born from that conviction. We set out to create a learning experience that would equip young women with practical skills, mentorship, professional networks and perspectives that would help them navigate the world of work with confidence, while developing the capabilities to thrive beyond it.
But my ambition was never simply to help young women secure employment or attain leadership positions. It was to strengthen their agency: their ability to make informed choices, navigate challenges, pursue their ambitions and define success on their own terms.
What began in Nigeria grew across Africa and eventually expanded globally. Along the way, we built a community of Fellows, mentors, alumni and partners whose experiences reinforced something I have always believed: when we invest meaningfully in people, the benefits extend far beyond the individual.
Today, BMGA Foundation is building on that experience through three distinct programmes: the BMGA Sport Lab, the BMGA Fellows Program and the BMGA Leadership Institute.
Each programme responds to different needs and stages of development. Through sport, education, mentorship and leadership development, we are creating opportunities for women and girls to build confidence, develop capabilities, broaden their perspectives and realise their potential.
For me, this evolution is not a departure from why BMGA was established. It is an extension of the same founding conviction.
I believe women and girls should have access to the resources, relationships, experiences and supportive environments that enable them to thrive. I believe in nurturing their potential, strengthening their capabilities and expanding the possibilities available to them, both today and in the future.
And I believe that when women and girls thrive, the benefits extend beyond individual achievement to their families, organisations, communities and society.
That is the belief that inspired BMGA Foundation. It is the belief that continues to guide our work.
